April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month and Capital Oral & Facial Surgery Center was a proud sponsor of this year’s Oral Cancer Foundation 5K Race in honor of Peter McGee Hoffman. The race was held on April 22, 2017 at Sligo-Dennis Ave Park in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The 3rd Annual 5K Race for Oral Cancer was a success after raising more than $61,892 to help achieve Peter’s goal of spreading awareness and raising critical funds in the fight to end oral cancer. Activities in addition to the race included a raffle, post-race BBQ, music, and an address from an oral cancer survivor.
About Peter McGee Hoffman
Peter McGee Hoffman was a healthy, active 23-year-old when diagnosed with tongue cancer in August 2008. He died just 7 short months later at the age of 24. Peter was unbelievably strong during his illness and had already begun planning a fundraising 5k from his hospital bed to raise awareness of oral cancer. Peter lived his life with kindness, generosity and a boundless sense of adventure. Inspired by those memories of Peter, his family and friends have organized 5k events and hope to continue Peter’s vision with this year’s 5k Walk/Run.
“At our inaugural walk in 2015 and at last year’s event in memory of our dear Peter, we were truly touched by the overwhelming love and support that was shown by family and friends. In the time that’s passed, the incidence rate of oral cancer has continued to rise, and with it, our resolve to raise money for education and research initiatives in memory of Peter.” – Family Member

Get Screened for Oral Cancer
Each year nearly 50,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with oral cancer. It will cause close to 10,000 deaths, killing one person every hour of every day. The good news is that it can often be found early in its development, through a simple and quick screening. Every adult should be screened. An oral cancer screening should be conducted every year, so call Capital Oral & Facial Surgery Center and get screened today. Call (202) 350-2268 to make an appointment with Dr. Virginia Lee.
